If iTunes is unresponsive it could be because of an issue with your computer or with the software itself. You could first try to sync the iPod with iTunes on a different system and if it works, it simply means that the version in your system is corrupted. You should resort to making the automatic sync disabled. If that helps the iPod respond, you can re-enable the sync options.

It helps to update the iTunes version to the latest available. You can restore the iPod to default settings. You must also ensure that the podcasts which are present should be deleted as well.
